Mary met Jim while attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo as a dairy science major. After her youngest child was off to college, she graduated with two additional degrees in Psychology and Business from Simpson College.  Mary has always been extremely active in her local community serving as a 4-H leader, the Fall River High School’s booster club and she established the Burney Fall River Education Foundation in 1991.  She served for ten years on the Shasta County Mental Health, Alcohol and Drug Board, the Shasta Regional Community Foundation Board, taught the Family-to-Family Course for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), a member of the St. Francis Parish Council, and chaired the USDA Farm Service Agency Committee in Shasta County.  She was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown as the Range Livestock Representative to the State Board of Forestry and Fire Protection and served for three years from 2013-2016.

Mary’s broad and diverse background has enabled her to serve her constituents for the last seven years as a Shasta County Supervisor with knowledge and experience.  She has accomplished much in those seven years while surviving the Carr Fire, a major county-wide paralyzing snowstorm, and the COVID-19 pandemic while serving as the District 3 County Supervisor.  Some of her achievements include the establishment of the Shasta County Fire Safe Council where millions of dollars of grant funding have allowed for much-needed fuel reduction projects county-wide.  She also advocated and helped establish the Medically Assisted Treatment Program (MAT) and the Jail-Based Competency Treatment Program in the Shasta County Jail. Mary has provided stability, common sense, and fiscal responsibility to the Shasta County Board of Supervisors.  She does not consider herself a politician, but a public servant.

Mary lives in McArthur, California with her husband Jim, on a hay and cattle operation, where she loves spending time in the hay fields or working with their cattle. District 3 is the largest of the districts in Shasta County and Mary loves meeting folks in the many small rural communities where she attends events, as well as those she represents in the southeast portion of Redding.
